I’m an MPC student and I’ve just given my 12th exams with 95% aggregate! initially my plans were to pursue my engineering but I’ve reconsidered and dropped the thought of doing it since it has no practical usage and of no help really since my main aim is to get into the top B schools… I would like you to suggest me a bachelors degree program that would give me an edge over others who wish to do their MBA’s from other fields. And i would also like to know if its too early now to start preparing for the CAT from institutes like TIME or when is the appropriate time to start over? I’m very good at maths and have been on the dot with cent percent marks till date in all my boards…my parents are suggesting me to take Maths-Stats-Computers as my bachelors degree but i feel the BBA program would be much better in terms of keeping me ahead…I have been reading the discussions for a long time and they all make absolute sense and i really value them….please help!!!

Thanks a lot for your advice Anil but the thing is that engineering is not all about maths and moreover i aint interested in that field a single bit…My main query was which of the two courses ie BBA or Bsc in Maths-stats-computer would be helpful…And also when should i start perparing for CAT!!!

    Dear Karan Kumar,

First and foremost let me assure you that most of the students who make into IIMs are engineering graduates. It doesn’t mean that others have no chance.

I find a serious paradox in your statement. You don’t want to consider engineering because it has no practical usage (of course this is only your opinion) and that is why you are considering other courses. So what about the practical usage of these other courses? So extending your logic I think you should not study any courses (provided your logic is correct).

Personally I am completely against your statement. How can you conclude so easily that engineering course has no practical usage? It all depends upon the college that you get into and your caliber. If you are passionate enough you can definitely apply what you have learned in your engineering course to your practical life and get success. If what you said is true, I am sure there will be no engineers in the near future which seldom happens. Anyway I will leave this decision to you.

Coming to your query you can consider joining any course BBA or BSc as none of these exams will help you to crack CAT. But you must maintain a good track of academics to get into IIMs. Also you must be able to answer the questions about your academics in the interviews that you face after you crack CAT.

Normally students who make into IIMs take around 1 year to crack CAT. Again it all depends upon your personal caliber. I encourage you to take the CAT 2008 Full Length Test after which you will be able to decide on this.

For all your CAT and post CAT activities you can always count on Learnhub’s Expert Team

    Hope this helps.

Thank You loadzzz Sureshbala…I absolutely agree with everything you just said and i’m sure it is gonna help me a lot in the decision i ought to make in the near future… But i dint mean that Engineering has no practical use at all…its just coz my eventual pursuit is an MBA and what i meant was it has little or probably no application in areas like Marketing, Investment banking and HR and i really dont perceive myself doing research on a particular subject in science…But i still might b wrong…anyways, thanks a lot!
