Why do Indian families not have cats? (Discussion)

JohnPhilipGreen saidWed, 23 Jul 2008 17:17:11 -0000 ( Link )

I have lots of Indian friends here in Canada… and have met lots of people on our travels to India.

I’ve noticed that Indian families rarely have cats as pets. Is that true? Why?

Cats are not looked upon favorably in India. There are a lot of bad luck superstitions about them. I have heard of incidents where the vet won’t even touch the cat.

While dogs are considered faithful, cats are supposed to be unfaithful and sly, well that is the general belief here in India.. It is considered a bad omen if a cat crosses your path . It is supposed to mean that you will not finish the task you have set out to do! A black cat is especially considered bad and sinister, as black cats have been associated with witches and witchcraft. It is also said that one should never challenge a cat in a closed room – it will go straight for your throat!! Personally i love cats but the Indian society in general is not very favourable toward the creature.I hope the scenario changes soon.

Yeah sorta of what I noticed. In Canada, some of those superstitions exists, particularly with black cats. But they are still well loved in general!

Cats suit my lifestyle well now, compared to dogs, because we live in a fairly small condo and I work long hours. Wouldn’t be fair to leave a dog inside that long, but cats don’t mind at all.

I completely agree with your viewpoint John. One more thing i would like to add to my previous post is that cats are considered a danger for infants according to beliefs here as they say cat poop and hair can be fatal for infants or children with week immune systems. I really don’t know if its true or not but i have heard that one many occasions. .

I think Indians are inherently lazy people and like others to do their jobs, . So they find it better to train a Dog who can fetch them newspapers and other things rather than get a cat. Personally, I like Dogs more than cats for he same reason.

Thats karma… whatever you give comes back to you at the end…. they buy a dog to escape work and end up getting more work !! :) I know some people here are hard working, but they end up being US Citizens at last which is very disappointing. And it is easy to make it big in India is you dont study. You can be a politician or a Bollywood actor. :)

Well, I believe each one of the reasons given by others may be true, partly or wholly, depending on the context or the idiosyncrasies of those people. Rather than see it as black or white, I would accept that it is probably an inexplicable grey area. And, India is not unique. All cultures or societies have some or the other inexplicable or irrational beliefs.

If you ask my personal view -

    1. I can’t take care of myself (which is one of the reasons why I’m looking for a Spouse !)

    2. I am not sure whether having a Spouse is better or having a Cat.

    3. Having both is certainly not an attractive proposition to me. One with claws is dangerous enough.

    4. Will they take care of me or do I have to take care of them ?

    5. The Finance Minister of this country is doing his best to tear me to shreds, do I have to get a Cat and support his efforts ?

    6. The salary hike I got is not enough to justify any additional expenditure.

    7. Is Cat a status symbol ?

    8. Even if it is, does any Cat suffice ? or particular breeds are preferred ?

    9. Did any Celebrity make any statement about Cat being a girl’s cute friend or a man’s pride ?

    10. How much do they cost anyway ? Are the prices expected to rise or drop in the near future ?

    11. Cats are known to drink milk left in the open. And, milk is costly today. So, first let me buy a refrigerator.

    12. If only superior breeds of Cats are status symbols, will they stay anywhere?

    13. Living in a small 1000 sft. accomodation with my family, I cannot afford to have separate enclosures for pets (you see, I don’t own dogs too !)

    14. If I hit my Cat in a fit of rage, will I be jailed under the PETA laws, just like say, a man beating his wife can be, under the various acts of abuse of a spouse?

    15. If I get a Cat now, and marry later, as I surely will, what if the girl doesn’t like Cats?

    16. Making enough money to afford a wife and family is turning out to be a poor dream anyway, do I now have to make money to prepare for divorce too ?

    17. If I let the Cat out later, will I be charged for gross negligence of duties?

    18. Think of it – I’m considering so many things to own a single Cat; What do I do if it gives birth to many more?

    19. If I own a male Cat (because I do not want a female that may give birth to pups), will I be charged under the gender discrimination laws?

    20. Will the government give me any tax breaks to afford a Cat?

    21. What are the prospects of employment for Cats ? After spending so much, what can I expect in return?

    Dear ysridhar,

I never thought that one should think this much just to decide whether to own a cat or not.
