IIM-Bangalore Selection Criteria 2012 announced

by Pritika Ghura

The prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore has announced its selection criterion for 2012-14 batch. This year, the institute will give weightage to several parameters such as CAT 2011 score, performance in class X, XII and relevant work experience. Student's performance in Personal Interview rounds would also be given weightage.

There will be two rounds of admission. The first will shortlist candidates on the basis of their score in CAT 2011. Those who qualify this round will be called for Personal Interview round. In this round, the student will be asked to write a short note (one page long) on any topic given by the institute. The topics include current affairs, political or an economic issue, sports and business affairs, etc. The student will be asked to complete his essay in 30 minutes. In this stage a candidate's work experience would be evaluated. Once a candidate clears this round then he will be called for Personal Interview Round.

First Shortlist: Percentile cut-off for 2011

Category Sec 1( Quantitative Ability) Sec 2 (Data Interpretation) Section 3(Verbal Ability) Aggregate
General 80 80 80 90
NC-OBC 70 70 70 80
SC/ ST 50 50 50 70
DA 45 45 45 60

Those students who secure the required percentile, his percentage scores in the 10th and 12th board exams are initially adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. The database of 10th and 12th scores of all CAT applicants of the past two years is used for identifying the 90th percentile score for each 10th and 12th board for this purpose. Then marks scored in graduation are considered. In this first round of short listing, candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible for weight under professional course. No other professional course is eligible for weight under professional course.

Weightage given to four components-:

CAT 2011 Score: 20%
Class Xth: 15%
Class X11 (Board): 10%
Graduation: 15%

Those who get the desired results are called for second round which comprises of Note Writing and Personal Interview. Interviewers will mark students on Note Content, Note Style and Personal Interview.

The work experience score will be multiplied by the quality of experience score, as evaluated by the interviewing panel. The quality of work experience score will be evaluated on a 5 point scale (0 - 0.5 - 1 - 1.5 - 2) by each member of the panel during the interviews. The average quality of work experience score will be multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score and accordingly the work/professional experience component score (maximum score 5) used in Phase 1 will be revised in Phase 2 (maximum score 10).

Let us see weightage divided in PI round

Content of the Note: 7.5%
Style of Content: 7.5%
Personal Interview: 20%
Relevant Work experience: Out of 5

I am going to complete 5 years experience in IT domain in May 2013 and looking forward for the one year Full Time Executive MBA. But in many institute, as per eligibility criteria, requires minimum 5 years exp completed till 31st March 2013 if taking admission in 2013-2014 batch and problem with me is mine 5 years will going to complete on 19 May 2013…

Query 1 : Will the top B school organization would consider and give relaxation of these 50 days less in 5 yrs exp. Or is there any other good B school considering 3 year experience.

Query 2 :Would it be beneficial to leave the well stabilize job and going for 1 year full course ?? ( As was associated with Wipro previously and now currently with Aricent Technology )

Query 3 : Does CAT/GMAT requires separate preparation ?..On which i emphasize more….!!

Looking forward for your response as it would be great help for me and my career growth.

    Hello Rinkesh,

Thanks for approaching Learnhub for your queries!

It's good to see the way you have put down your queries.

Considering the details you have shared above, your work experience which is short of a a couple of days from being five years could be accepted by Universities if it has been substantial in terms of growth and leadership qualities your application can be considered.

Other than this there are many B-Scools in IIM league as well which accept three years of work experience for their executive MBA programs.

Executive MBA programs are basically meant to take your career leaps ahead. You can expect to move to mid management levels after completion of the program.

Preparation for GMAT and CAT could overlap but you have to prepare separately for the exams concentrating on the individual patterns. There are many B-Schools offering admissions based on GMAT scores alone.

You can shortlist these schools to channelize your efforts in a single test.

Also to add to the above information, we assist students in preparation of essays and interview for the executive MBA program. In fact we can support in choosing out most plausible options for admissions.

In case you are interested to consider our professional assistance from industry experts we are just a a phone call or an email away.

You ca reach me for any such clarification at ankita.arora@learnhub.com or can call us at toll free number 1800 420 3039.

We hope to hear back from you soon.

All the best in all your future endeavors.
